Over the course of two (miserably cold) days during the week between Christmas and New Years I strolled around Midtown Manhattan to take pictures of the holiday windows. Working near Fifth Ave I’ve developed a fond admiration for the creative effort that many stores put into their windows. They are on display all year but stores pull out all the stops around the holidays and my fond admiration gives way to absolute awe.
Around the city temporarily shrouded windows are uncovered to reveal highly skilled combinations of scenery, props, and fashion. Tourists and New Yorkers alike gather at holiday windows to snap pictures of the thematic scenes on display. Department stores such as Macy*s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Lord & Taylor feature must-see designs every year. Some of the fashion shops get caught up in the holiday spirit and wrap their windows and buildings in holiday decorations.
Dates vary by store but holiday windows are typically on display from mid-November to early January.
